New Prevention for Colon Cancer
There are many different forms of cancer nowadays, and it seems like we are hearing of a new type of cancer every few weeks or so. One of these types of cancer that has grown more and more prevalent in the last couple of years is colon cancer. Researchers have been doing quite a few studies on the causes and preventions of colon cancer in the last little while, and a few surprising (and some not so surprising) results have come from this research. Some of the not so surprising results have been that some of the leading causes of colon cancer are the typical American diet, smoking, lack of exercise, etc. However, a new study conducted by researchers at Emory University shows that one of the causes of the disease could be the lack of calcium and Vitamin D!
This study focused more on things that can prevent colon cancer, instead of the causes, so perhaps the lack of calcium and Vitamin D does not necessarily cause colon cancer, but adding them to the diet definitely helps to fight and prevent it! It appears that taking extra calcium and Vitamin D supplements create a protein in the colon called Bax. Since this protein kills off any cancer cells that may pop up inside the colon, you absolutely want more Bax protein inside your colon – especially if cancer runs in your family. Vitamin D and calcium also helps the body with cell movement and proliferation, which in turn, helps to prevent cancerous cells from thriving and growing inside the body.
A lot of people like to get their vitamins and minerals naturally and there are many foods that contain Vitamin D and calcium. Here are a few of the top, healthier foods that you can eat to increase your levels of this colon cancer fighting duo:
- Bluefin Tuna contains the most Vitamin D out of all the types of fish, but it has to be cooked for you to get the most out of it.
- Atlantic Salmon is another good source of the cancer preventing vitamin, but again, it needs to be cooked.
- Canned Pacific Salmon can be eaten raw, and it is a great source of both Vitamin D and calcium.
- Milk contains both calcium and Vitamin D, so you should be drinking a couple of glasses a day (along with plenty of water) to get the full benefits. If you buy milk with added calcium, it will be even better for you.
- If you don’t like milk, or you are lactose intolerant, fortified rice or soy drinks are also high in calcium.
- Veggies such as greens and beans contain a good amount of calcium as well.
- One great source of Vitamin D is not a food - the sun provides you with the vitamin, and the longer you are outside on a sunny day, the more Vitamin D your body will absorb
If you are finding it hard to eat these foods on a regular basis, I would encourage you to buy a supplement and add that to your daily diet. Vitamin and mineral supplement are always natural and safe, so you don’t have to worry about taking them.
