The consumption of alcohol has been a long practice among us humans. Ever since we started settling down and farming in our villages and cities, human beings have also started brewing alcoholic beverages.
Ethanol is a by-product of rotting fruits, and this might be the first place man encountered the substance. And by learning to ferment the fruits, humans eventually discovered the way to make wine. This in essence started our bitter sweet love affair with alcohol.
But now we have learned that alcohol is carcinogenic. And this is self-evident with many studies and observation between doctors and researchers.
To date excessive alcohol consumption has been attributed to the cancer of the oropharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, rectum, female breast and the colon.
But only a small percentage of people are aware of this fact, and the media or social media do not have a hard stance against alcohol consumption. But the people have the right to know that alcohol causes cancer and we should reduce or if not give up its consumption.
In 2007, the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) established a link between the excessive intake of Alcohol and Colon Cancer. It also shows that alcoholics are 23% more at risk of getting more diseases.
Then a 2015 paper from the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Shanghai Jiao Tong University showed that regular beer drinkers had a 20% increased risk of getting colon cancer. These studies prove that excessive or regular consumption of alcohol can be very deadly.
According to the WHO colon cancer is one of the most common cancer that afflicts both men and women. It causes about 774,000 deaths every year.
It is a painful disease and if not treated at an early stage can cause death. It can be hard to detect, but there are a few symptoms that might help you identify it early on, namely:
- A Change In Bowel Habit – If you are experiencing an increase of times you need to defecate. Or if you suddenly acquired loose bowel movement without some sort of explanation.
- Blood In Stool – if there is also signs of blood in your stool with the previous symptoms then it might be time to see a Gastro-Physician.
- Constant Abdominal Pain – Pain is also an indicator of colon cancer, if your abdominal region constantly experiences this with all-of-the above symptoms then there is a possibility of colon cancer.
- Anaemia – another symptom you need to watch-out for is this and coupled with any of the previous symptoms, you might want to see a doctor ASAP.
Now detection and early treatment is a great way to avoid death by colon cancer. But it the prevention of it is much better. The best way to avoid this type of cancer is by also avoiding alcoholic drinks.
When you consume ethanol in wine or beer, the body breaks this down into acetaldehyde, and this is a known to damage your DNA which would eventually increase the risk of acquiring cancer.
Alcohol also leads to the development of polyps in your colon and these benign growths can often turn into colon cancer tumors.
Another disadvantage of drinking alcohol is that it prevents your body from breaking down and absorbing a variety of vitamins and nutrients that help the body fight cancers.
Alcohol can severely weaken your immune system and this can also make you prone to other diseases. There are many vitamins and nutrients that help the body healthy and cancer-free, here are some of them:
1. Beta Carotene
A precursor of Vitamin A, it is mostly found in orange and green vegetables like carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, squash, bell pepper and many more.
There are some studies that shows that this amazing nutrient can help protect the body against lung cancer and stomach cancer.
2. Vitamin B6
Vitamin B6 is a B-Vitamin that is essential in maintaining a healthy immune system and helps the lungs against pollution and infection.

3. Vitamin C
