By - Updated Oct 18, 2014

While you may have heard about cleansing the colon and why this could be important in terms of curing symptoms of colon fatigue, you may not know exactly what the colon does and how it works. It’s a good idea to learn a little bit more about colon function in order to really understand why cleansing the colon is so important. The colon is a large muscular tube, and acts as the final gate for food or waste material to pass through on its way out of the body. In this way, it serves as the sewage system of the body, and the end of the digestive system.

Cleansing the ColonThe exact functions that the colon performs when it is processing the partially digested food are several. These are all important to bear in mind when cleansing the colon, so that you help the colon perform these operations in the most efficient manner. The first is to absorb any extra water that may be included in the waste material, and compact it into the smallest amount of area, to be pushed through the various sections of the colon. Cleansing the colon may be needed if you are dehydrated, or are having problems with this compacted movement.

One of the main problems that can arise with this colon function is that fecal matter can remain within the hidden pockets of the colon for years at a time, slowly becoming stagnant. Without cleansing the colon, this could be absorbed by other organs of the body after being leaked through the colon walls or it could simply weigh your body down. That is why after cleansing the colon, many people report feeling immediately lighter, healthier, and with higher energy levels. These results are for the simple reason that this stagnant waste is finally out of the body.

Sometimes all it takes are simple changes in diet to go about cleansing the colon, and other times, ore serious measures are needed. These could range from taking herbal laxatives to going in for professional enemas. There are a variety of ways to attack the issues of cleansing the colon. Because this is the largest and most important part of the digestives system in terms of eliminating waste from the body, for a healthy lifestyle it is quite important to pay attention to the various needs of the large intestine, including this cleansing the colon every so often, particularly with age.
