Metastatic Liver Cancer: How Colon Cancer Can Reach to the Liver

By - Updated Dec 27, 2018

The American Cancer Society has indicated that the colon cancer is one of the top causes of cancer-related mortality in the US. Nevertheless, early detection and treatment can often result in a complete cure. Colon cancer patients must be cautious however that colon cancer can reach to the liver.

What Are Liver Metastases?

Almost any type of cancer can spread from somewhere else in the body to the liver. These may include breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, stomach cancer and colon cancer. The spread of such cancerous tumors is known as ‘liver metastases’.

Complications such as pain, weight loss, obstruction of the bile’s flow, decreased appetite and in case of late stages— liver failure are possible symptoms that a colon cancer had reached the liver.

Tests and Exams

Call your oncologist if you have cancer and suppose that the cancerous tumors have reached your liver. A series of diagnostic tests and medical exams may be done to diagnose liver metastases. These may include Ultrasound, CT scan and/or MRI of the abdomen, PET scan, liver function tests and liver biopsy.

The Story of Jim’s Son – 4th Metastatic Liver Cancer Survivor

In this metastatic liver cancer case, the doctors had performed an emergency colon surgery to get rid of a tumor that was mistaken for constipation. It must be noted that constipation accompanied by blood in the stools may be a warning sign for patients to undergo a thorough check-up.

Jim’s son is now taking cancer treatments for his liver. His most recent visit to his oncologist indicated his liver levels were failing by 50%, and yet we can clearly identify him as a metastatic liver cancer survivor.

Jim’s son is well taken care of by his oncology nurse aunt, who successfully nursed her own way back from breast cancer with chemotherapy, accompanied by alternative cancer therapies. Jim’s aunt is now cancer-free and presently takes care of his nephew’s treatment. This goes to show that it’s better when you get help from another person who has experienced or has defeated cancer.

Prevention

There’s no miracle cure to cancer, not even the best “colon cleanse” or “liver cleanse” formula out there. The truth is that cancer treatments where never so easy and it’s always best to consult your doctor immediately if you suspect you have cancer. Early detection of colon cancer may prevent the colon cancer to reach the liver or other areas of the body, such as the lungs, bones or brain.

In fact, a colon cancer can be completely cured when found early; hence prevent the spread of cancer tumors to the liver by detecting and removing precancerous polyps through colonoscopy.
